Why these three are so tempting

Trolltunga, the rock ledge high above a lake, Pulpit Rock, the flat cliff top over the Lysefjord, and the Geirangerfjord, with its waterfalls and hairpin roads, are the images that sell Norway. If you are staying in Bergen, it is natural to wonder whether you can see one of them in a day. Social media has made them famous far beyond Norway, and it is easy to underestimate the distances when you look at a small map of a long country.

The honest answer is that each of them is far from Bergen, and Trolltunga and Pulpit Rock also involve a long hike. A day trip means leaving in the morning and sleeping in Bergen again, and for these places that leaves almost no time at the sight itself, or none at all.

Every travel time on this page comes from the route planner of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, measured from Strandkaien in central Bergen, or from Visit Bergen. The planner gives drive time only, so ferry waits, stops and traffic come on top.

Trolltunga: a day for the hike alone

Trolltunga sits at 1,180 m above sea level, around 700 m above the Ringedalsvannet lake, and roughly 80,000 people a year make the hike.910 The route planner gives 136 km and 2 hours 33 minutes from Bergen to Odda, and 148 km and 2 hours 55 minutes to the Skjeggedal car park, each with 1 ferry crossing.111 That is the drive alone; ferry waits and a break on the way come on top.

The hike itself is long. From the P2 Skjeggedal car park it is 27 km and 8 to 12 hours; from P3 Måglitopp, the shortest option, it is 20 km and 7 to 10 hours; from P1 Tyssedal it is 38 km and around 15 hours.21213 Visit Bergen recommends starting by 8:00 in the morning at the latest.8

Add the drive in both directions to the hike, and a Trolltunga day trip from Bergen means 2 hours 55 minutes behind the wheel each way on top of a full day on foot.1 By public transport it is not possible at all: bus 930 to Odda takes about 3 hours, and Visit Bergen states that you cannot take the bus and complete the hike on the same day.3 Stay at least one night near Odda.

Season and guides on Trolltunga

Timing matters as much as distance. From 1 June to 30 September experienced hikers can do Trolltunga without a guide, while from 1 October to 31 May the hike should only be done with a guide.1617 Snow and short days make the winter route a serious mountain outing.

In the dark months the light is the other limit. In mid-December Bergen has only 5.8 hrs of daylight, far less than the hike needs, so a guided winter trip starts and ends in darkness.18

If Trolltunga is the one thing you must see, build a separate two-day plan around it, with a night in Odda before the hike. If it is one wish among many, choose a fjord day from Bergen and save your legs for a shorter walk such as the glacier lake in Folgefonna National Park.

Trolltunga explained: the hike, the parking, the season

No video data loads before you press play.

Pulpit Rock is closer to Stavanger

Pulpit Rock, or Preikestolen, is a cliff that rises 604 m above the fjord, and the hike to it is 8 km and takes about 4 to 5 hours there and back.445 It belongs to the Stavanger region, not to Bergen's. The view from the top runs straight down to the water.

The route planner gives 245 km and 5 hours 11 minutes of driving from Bergen to the Preikestolen Fjellstue trailhead, with 2 ferry crossings.4 A day trip from Bergen to Pulpit Rock would mean 5 hours 11 minutes of driving in each direction plus the hike, which no sensible plan allows.4

The practical way to see it is to stay in Stavanger. The fastest drive between Stavanger and Bergen on the E39 takes 4 hours over 210 km, so you can move between the two cities in a morning and do the hike the next day.46

Geiranger is a separate trip

The Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord form one World Heritage site, inscribed in 2005, but they lie 120 km apart.745 From Bergen, the route planner gives 371 km and 6 hours 11 minutes of driving to Geiranger, with 1 ferry crossing.6 Ferry timetables decide part of the journey, so the real time is usually longer than the planner's figure.

A day trip from Bergen to Geiranger would therefore mean 6 hours 11 minutes of driving in each direction and only a glimpse of the fjord in between.6 The drive between Ålesund, the nearest large town to Geiranger, and Bergen is 420 km and about 7 hours 30 minutes, which shows how far north this part of fjord Norway lies.49

If Geiranger is on your list, plan it as part of a road trip of several days, or visit from Ålesund. From Bergen, the Nærøyfjord gives you the same UNESCO landscape of narrow water and cliffs as high as 1,400 m above it.50

If you have more than one day

With extra days the picture changes completely. A night in Odda turns Trolltunga into a realistic plan: drive or take the bus the day before, start early on the trail, and return to Bergen the following day. The bus to Odda takes about 3 hours, so even without a car this works with a night in between.3

Pulpit Rock fits a trip that continues south. Drive or take the coastal route to Stavanger, which is 4 hours away on the E39, hike the next morning, and travel on from there.46 Geiranger fits a loop north through the fjords towards Ålesund, with nights along the way.49

If your time in Bergen is short, accept that these places belong to another journey. Use your days here for the fjords, railways and waterfalls within reach, and save the long hikes and the northern fjords for a trip planned around them.

What to do from Bergen instead

If you came for dramatic cliffs above water, the Stegastein platform stands 650 m above the Aurlandsfjord and can be reached on a guided day from Bergen.15 The tour with lunch runs 12 hours and gives you 30 minutes on the platform.

If you came for the World Heritage fjord, the Nærøyfjord is the closer half of the same listing as Geiranger. The tour this site recommends cruises it for 2 hours and adds both railways and a Viking village in 10.5 hours.

If you came for a hike with a big view, the Folgefonna day walks you to a glacier lake in a national park, with 2.5 hours in the park and a packed lunch. It holds 4.89 from 785 reviews, the highest rating among the day trips on this site with hundreds of reviews. Each of these fits between breakfast and dinner, and on all of them someone else does the driving.
