How the trips were put in order

Every trip on this page leaves Bergen and brings you back the same day, so you never change hotels. We put them in order by what matters on a single day in western Norway: a landscape you cannot see from the city, a fair share of time out of the vehicle, and a long record of satisfied guests on the listing itself. Price came last, because choosing the wrong day costs more than a few dollars of difference between two good tours.

Scores and review totals are taken straight from each listing, which means they rest on hundreds of real bookings, not on our personal taste. Long days are flagged as long. Hours in a vehicle are not wasted when the place at the end of them is the reason you flew to Norway.

One caveat before the list: the weather in Bergen changes fast, and no ranking can promise blue sky over a fjord. Read the list as a guide to the kind of day that suits you, look at the fjord forecast the night before, and remember that each guided trip here can be cancelled until a day ahead. A grey morning in Bergen often clears further inland, and the reverse happens too, so judge by the forecast for the fjord you are heading to rather than the view from your hotel window.

Flåm Railway, Nærøyfjord and the Viking village

The tour this site recommends packs the classic fjord route into one loop. It runs 10.5 hours, holds a 4.78 rating from 1,286 reviews and starts from $422. The ticket covers the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway, a 2-hour cruise on the Nærøyfjord and a guided hour in the Viking village of Njardarheimr at Gudvangen.

The railway drops from Myrdal, 867 m above sea level, to Flåm at 2 m, and the fjord that follows is only 250 m wide at its narrowest point.23 In one day you see western Norway from several angles: high plateau, steep valley, then still water between cliffs.

The price of that variety is time in transit and a fixed rhythm. Food is not included, and the order of the day can flip, railway first or Viking village first, depending on season and timetable. Got a single fjord day and want rail as well as water? Then this remains the one to book. Book it early in your stay, so a stormy forecast leaves you room to move the date rather than lose the day.

Stegastein and Flåm by coach and boat

Two tours trade the railway for the Stegastein viewpoint. The larger one runs 12 hours, includes lunch and holds 4.74 from 1,127 reviews. It drives along the Osterfjord, cruises the Nærøyfjord for 2 hours, gives you 40 minutes in Flåm and 30 minutes on the platform at Stegastein.

Stegastein juts 30 m out from the mountainside, 650 m above the Aurlandsfjord, with the view running far down the fjord.4 The smaller minibus version takes 11 hours and holds 4.84 from 629 reviews, with 30 minutes at the viewpoint.

Choose these if a panoramic view matters more to you than the mountain railway. Both start early from the quay in the centre, so plan breakfast the night before, and bring a warm layer for the open platform, where the wind can be sharp even on a sunny day. A lunch-included tour also saves you queuing for food in Flåm, which matters when the stop there is short.

Hardangerfjord, waterfalls and a glacier lake

If you are hunting for the best scenic day trips from Bergen, Norway, look south-east as well as east. There lies the Hardangerfjord, the second longest fjord in Norway at 179 km and an orchard region that grows about 40% of the country's fruit.3839 The highest-rated trip on this page goes there: the Folgefonna glacier lake tour holds 4.89 from 785 reviews and runs 10.5 hours with a packed lunch.

That day crosses the fjord by ferry to Jondal, stops 45 minutes at Steinsdalsfossen, where a path leads behind the falling water, and gives you 2.5 hours in Folgefonna National Park for a gentle walk to the glacier lake Bondhusvatnet.14

For a shorter day, the waterfall and apple pie tour takes 6.5 hours from $159, and the Vøringsfossen day runs 11.5 hours to a waterfall that falls 182 m into the Måbødalen valley.16 The Hardangerfjord page sets all of them side by side. As a rule of thumb, the shorter Hardanger days leave you a relaxed evening in Bergen, while the glacier lake and Vøringsfossen days are full outings that end around dinner time.

Boats only: Rosendal and Mostraumen

If you would rather spend the day on the water than on the road, two boat trips leave from the centre of Bergen. The Hardangerfjord Express to Rosendal is the cheapest full day on this page, from $93, with 3.5 hours of free time in the village. It is self-guided, with no commentary on board.

Rosendal is the home of the Barony, built in 1665 and surrounded by a Renaissance garden.18 On weekdays the boat leaves Bergen at 08:50 and is back at 16:20, which leaves an evening in the city.40

The shortest option is the classic cruise to Mostraumen, a 3.5 to 4-hour round trip through the Osterfjord to a strait so narrow the boat seems to squeeze through.1 It fits a morning or an afternoon, and one operator runs it all year from behind the Tourist Information.41 It is the easiest way to show children a fjord without a long day in a vehicle, and it combines well with a visit to the fish market and Bryggen afterwards.

Further: the Sognefjord and the Fjærland glacier

The longest day trip in this ranking goes north to Fjærland. The guided tour runs 13 hours and holds 4.40 from 42 reviews, crossing the mountains to Vik, sailing the Sognefjord and the Fjærlandsfjord, and visiting the Norwegian Glacier Museum and the Bøyabreen glacier.

The Sognefjord is the longest fjord in Norway at 205 km and the deepest, dropping 1,308 m below sea level.4243 Fjærland, at the end of its side arm, could only be reached by boat until 1986.37 It is a long day, but it ends beside the ice.

Choose it if glaciers are the thing you came for, and accept that the coach part is long. If you are less sure, the Hardangerfjord trips reach a glacier lake in a shorter day, and the Sognefjord page explains the options in more detail.

What did not make the list, and why

Trolltunga, Pulpit Rock and Geiranger are the names everyone asks about, and they are spectacular. They are also far: the route planner of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration puts Geiranger at 6 hours 11 minutes of driving from Bergen, one way.34 A separate page explains what is realistic.

Private tours did not make the ranking either, because a private day is a different product, with its own guide and vehicle for your party, and does not compare fairly with a seat on a coach. The private day on the Flåm route with the most reviews starts from $1,258 and includes hotel pickup. Our private tours page covers when that is worth it.

Finally, Norway in a Nutshell, the self-guided round trip on public trains, bus and boat, is a strong alternative to the guided loop at the top of this list. It departs every day of the year from Bergen station around 08:00.24 Read its own page if you prefer to travel without a guide. The trade-off is simple: you keep the freedom to linger, and you lose the stories and the help a guide gives when a connection runs late.
