Why see the fjords from the water
From a coach you see a fjord through glass; from a deck you feel it. The wind changes as the water narrows, the cliffs rise above the rail, and the sound of waterfalls carries across the surface. A boat trip in Bergen also starts in the heart of the city, at the quays around the Fish Market, so there is no early transfer to a station or a coach park.
Bergen is surrounded by water on almost every side, and several boat routes leave from the centre. They range from a half-day cruise into the Osterfjord to a full day on the Sognefjord, and they suit very different travellers: families with young children, travellers who get carsick, and anyone who simply prefers the slow rhythm of a ship to the motorway.
The trade-off is reach. A boat cannot climb to a viewpoint or a glacier lake, and the longest crossings spend hours on open water before the fjord begins. The sections below set out what each route really gives you, so you can pick the one that matches the time you have.
Mostraumen: the half-day classic
The classic cruise from Bergen to Mostraumen is a 3.5 to 4-hour round trip through the Osterfjord to a narrow and dramatic strait.1 It is the shortest real fjord experience from the city, and it fits neatly into a morning or an afternoon, leaving the rest of the day for Bryggen, the fish market or a funicular ride. Combine it with lunch at the fish market and an afternoon at Bryggen, and you have a full Bergen day that still includes a real fjord.
Several operators sail the route, and one of them, Fjord Cruise AS, runs a 3.5-hour cruise from just behind the Tourist Information all year round.3 In winter that makes Mostraumen one of the easiest fjord trips to plan, with no mountain roads or ferry connections involved.
If you want a guide and a city tour in the same day, the combined listing pairs the Mostraumen cruise with a ride on the Fløibanen funicular and a walk around Bryggen and Bergenhus Fortress. It runs 6.5 hours from $209 and holds 4.74 from 57 reviews.

Start from the time you can spare
The classic Mostraumen fjord cruise is a 3.5 to 4-hour return journey from Bergen, taking you through the beautiful Osterfjord to the narrow and dramatic Mostraumen strait.
Rosendal on the Hardangerfjord Express
The Hardangerfjord Express is the full-day boat trip of choice for travellers who want a village as well as a fjord. On weekdays it leaves Bergen at 08:50 and arrives in Rosendal at 10:45; the return leaves at 14:25 and is back in Bergen at 16:20.5 At weekends from 1 May to 30 September it leaves later, at 11:00.8
The crossing takes about two hours each way and leaves 3.5 hours in Rosendal.2 That is time enough for the Barony, built in 1665 and surrounded by a Renaissance garden.6 Coffee by the quay and a stroll through the lanes fill the rest of the time. The GetYourGuide listing starts from $93 for the 7-hour day.
Note that the trip is self-guided: there is no commentary on board, and you explore Rosendal on your own. Arrive at the Strandkaiterminalen 20 minutes before departure, and look for the Hardangerfjordekspressen sign at the west end of the quay. Pack a picnic or plan lunch in the village, and keep an eye on the clock: the 14:25 return sailing is the one to catch.

The long boat to Flåm on the Sognefjord
For a full day on the water between April and October, the Norled express boat sails from Bergen into the Sognefjord and on to Flåm. A boat from Bergen to Flåm takes about 5.5 hours one way, and you enter the Sognefjord after about 2 hours.410
The boat leaves Bergen at 8:00, and the return leaves Flåm at 15:30 and reaches Bergen at 20:45.1112 That gives you about two hours in Flåm, enough for a walk and lunch but not for the railway as well.1112 On a fine day it is a magnificent way to see the coast and the longest fjord in Norway, which runs 205 km inland.13
On a grey day the open sections can feel long, so take something to read and a warm layer for the deck. If you want both the boat and the Flåm Railway, look at Norway in a Nutshell or the guided railway loop instead, where the fjord part is the narrow Nærøyfjord. Book your seat in advance in summer, when the boat carries both day trippers and travellers heading into the fjords for longer stays.
The Nærøyfjord cruise from Flåm or Gudvangen
The cruise through the Nærøyfjord does not start in Bergen at all. The boat between Flåm and Gudvangen takes about 2 hours, runs all year round and passes through the Nærøyfjord, a World Heritage fjord only 250 m wide at its narrowest point.79
From Bergen you reach it as part of a day tour. The guided loop this site recommends includes the 2-hour crossing aboard the electric Future of The Fjords, together with both railways and the Viking village. It starts from $422 and holds 4.78 from 1,286 reviews.
If the narrow fjord is your priority, this is the boat trip to plan your day around. The Mostraumen and Rosendal routes are lovely in their own way; the Nærøyfjord is about its walls, which tower as high as 1,400 m above the water in this UNESCO landscape.14
Practical points before you sail
Most boats from Bergen leave from the quays around the Fish Market and the Tourist Information, a short walk from Bryggen and the hotels of the centre. The Rosendal boat uses the Strandkaiterminalen, and the listing asks you to be there 20 minutes before departure. Leave a margin in the morning, because the quay area is busy with buses, taxis and other boats, and it is easy to walk to the wrong berth.
Timetables change with the seasons, and some routes sail only on weekdays outside summer. The Rosendal express, for example, adds weekend sailings only from 1 May to 30 September and has no departures on 24 and 25 December.815 Check the timetable for your exact date before you plan the rest of your week around a boat.
Food on board is usually limited to a small café or none at all, so carry a snack and water, especially on the longer crossings. If you suffer from cold, take a thermos: a hot drink on an open deck in a fjord breeze is one of the small pleasures of a boat day out of Bergen.
Choosing your boat day
With half a day, take Mostraumen. With a full day and a wish to stay off the road, take the Rosendal boat and enjoy the village. With a full day and a wish to see the famous narrow fjord, book a tour that includes the Nærøyfjord cruise, and accept the coach and train that bring you there.
For families with young children, the Mostraumen cruise is a manageable length that still feels like an adventure. Travellers prone to seasickness should know that the long express boats follow the coast for a while before they enter the fjords, so a seat in the middle of the boat is the steadiest choice.
Whichever boat you choose, dress for the deck rather than the cabin. July or not, the breeze over the fjord bites, yet the views are best from the rail. A hat, thin gloves and a waterproof jacket weigh little and make the whole day more comfortable.
