Coach, two trains, a boat and a Viking village
You meet your guide at the Guided Fjord Tours office in Bergen and leave the city by coach, heading east through tunnels and along lakes for about 1.5 hours to Voss station. From there the Bergen Railway carries you up into the mountains, and at Myrdal you change to the Flåm Railway for the hour-long ride down to the fjord.

In Flåm the boat is waiting. The Nærøyfjord crossing lasts 2 hours aboard Future of The Fjords, a fully electric boat, and it ends at Gudvangen, where a guide walks you through the Viking village of Njardarheimr for an hour. The coach collects you there for the drive back over the mountains.
In summer the return includes a photo stop at Tvindefossen; in winter the stop is in Voss instead. Depending on the season and the timetables the whole loop can also run the other way round, Viking village first and railway last, so read your confirmation the night before.
Why this day
Mountain railway at noon.
Fjord cruise after lunch.
Vikings before dusk.
This Bergen day tour strings coach, rail and an electric boat together in one loop. It lasts 10.5 hours, is guided in English or Spanish and holds a 4.78 rating from 1,286 reviews. The Bergen Railway and the Flåm Railway, the 2-hour Nærøyfjord cruise and a guided hour in the Viking village of Njardarheimr are all part of the price.

More · why here
A World Heritage fjord and a railway built by hand
UNESCO added the Nærøyfjord to its list in 2005, paired with the Geirangerfjord as the West Norwegian Fjords. It is about 18 km long and only 250 m wide at its narrowest point, so the mountains feel close enough to touch from the deck.

The railway half of the day has its own story. The Flåm Railway drops from Myrdal, 867 m above sea level on the Bergen Line, to Flåm at 2 m, and most of the route runs at a gradient of 5.5 per cent. Of its 20 tunnels, 18 were dug by hand.
Put the two together and you see western Norway from above and from below in a single afternoon: the high plateau around Myrdal, the deep green valley of Flåm, then the narrow water between cliffs.

We stayed on deck for the whole cruise. Even in July the wind was strong and cold, so bring a warm coat, gloves and a hat. The views were worth it.”

The Flåm Railway and the stop at Kjosfossen were magical and the Nærøyfjord was breathtaking. My only wish would have been a short stop in Flåm before the cruise.”

What guests on this tour keep mentioning
Read the reviews and one theme stands out: the people who run the day. Guests praise the guides by name for their stories, their humour and their patience with questions, and they thank the drivers for a calm, comfortable ride. Several write that the long day ran smoothly from start to finish.

The railway and the cruise draw the warmest words. Guests describe the views from the Flåm Railway and the fjord as breathtaking, and one singles out the stop at Kjosfossen as the moment they remember. Others say the variety of trains, boat and coach is what made the day feel full rather than long.
The Viking village divides opinion more. Some guests found it fascinating, with an enthusiastic guide inside the village; others call it the least impressive part of the day, note that it comes straight after the cold boat ride, or wish they had more time there to try the activities and look inside the huts. Go in with curiosity and modest expectations.

Summer greens, winter ice and the light in between
From October to April the tour may be adapted to the weather: the photo stops can change, and ice on the fjord can alter the route of the cruise. The stop on the coach transfer also follows the season, with Voss in winter and the Tvindefossen waterfall in summer.

Daylight is the other big difference. In mid-June Bergen has 19 hrs of daylight, while in mid-December it has 5.8 hrs. A winter loop therefore runs partly in twilight, which suits the snow on the high plateau but leaves less time for photographs in sharp light.
Spring and autumn sit in between, with 11.7 hrs of daylight in mid-March and 10.3 hrs in mid-October. Autumn turns the valleys yellow and red, so there is no wrong month, only a different day.

More · rain and wind
Bergen weather, and why the deck feels colder
Bergen is wet in every month. Even in May, the driest month in the city's averages, 10 days bring 2.5 mm or more, and October counts 16 such days. Pack for rain whatever the forecast says, and treat a dry day as a bonus.

The fjord adds wind. Guests who stayed on deck for the whole cruise in July write that the wind was strong and cold and that they wished they had brought gloves and a hat. You can step inside to warm up between the narrowest stretches.
Low cloud is not a reason to cancel. Mist hanging halfway up the walls of the Nærøyfjord is part of its character, and waterfalls look their fullest after rain. Keep the free cancellation window in mind if a severe storm is forecast, and otherwise go.

Hold a seat now and pay closer to the day
Reserve now and pay later is part of the deal, so you can secure a date while your travel plans are still moving. That helps on a tour that ties together trains and a boat with fixed departures.

Change your mind a day or more before departure and the money comes back in full. If the forecast turns bad a few days ahead, you have time to decide calmly instead of losing your money, and you can rebook another day of your stay.
The price you see is a starting price, from $422 per person, and the checkout shows the final figure in your currency. Food and gratuities are extra, so budget a little for lunch on the road.

Where your camera earns its keep
On the Flåm Railway the train stops at Kjosfossen for about 5 minutes, long enough to step out and feel the spray of the falls. Sit by a window if you can, because the line twists through tunnels and around tight bends, and the views flick from one side to the other.

On the boat, watch for the tight middle stretch of the Nærøyfjord. Along these UNESCO fjords the rock climbs as high as 1,400 m straight out of the water, so shoot wide, or switch your phone to panorama, to get cliff and water in a single picture.
Tvindefossen, the summer photo stop, drops 110 m in a series of steps. Keep a cloth for your lens: between waterfall spray and fjord drizzle, a wet lens is the most common reason for a blurry shot.
From mountain to fjord
The Flåm Railway starts high on the Bergen Line at Myrdal.
Myrdal station sits 867 m above sea level, and the line runs down to Flåm at 2 m in about an hour, mostly at a gradient of 5.5 per cent. No road a car can use reaches Myrdal.
More · what to pack
Good shoes, water and a warm layer for the deck
Pack what the operator lists: comfortable shoes, snacks, water, comfortable clothes and clothing for the weather. Take that seriously: you walk on wet stone at the waterfall, on paths in the Viking village and on a deck that can be slippery in the rain.

Food is not included, but the day gives you several chances to buy something, and your guide explains where. A sandwich in your bag still helps on a day that keeps moving.
Dress in layers. A rain shell, a beanie and light gloves fit in any bag and make the difference between enjoying the open deck and hiding in the cabin. A small power bank keeps your phone alive through a long day of photographs.

The other day trips this guide covers
This loop is the classic among Bergen day tours, but it is not the only good day out of the city. The Hardangerfjord lies just over an hour away by car, with orchards, the Steinsdalsfossen waterfall and the glacier lake trips of Folgefonna. Our Hardangerfjord guide compares the tours that go there.

If you prefer water to roads, a classic Mostraumen cruise from Bergen takes 3.5 to 4 hours there and back, and the Hardangerfjord Express runs to Rosendal on weekdays. The fjord cruise page sets the boat trips side by side.
Other pages cover Norway in a Nutshell on your own tickets, trips by train or by hire car, the Sognefjord and the Fjærland glacier, winter options, private tours and how many days Bergen itself deserves. A separate page explains honestly why Trolltunga, Pulpit Rock and Geiranger are hard to fit into one day.

An evening in Bergen after the fjord
The tour ends back at the office in the centre, close to the harbour, so the evening is yours. Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf, is a short walk away; UNESCO listed it in 1979, and some 62 of its old buildings still stand.

If you still have energy, the Fløibanen funicular reaches the top of Mount Fløyen in about 6 minutes, and the viewpoint sits 320 m above sea level. Walking back down takes around 45 minutes on paths through the forest.
On light summer evenings the view over the harbour lasts long after dinner. In winter, wrap up and enjoy the lit wharf instead; after a day of trains and boats, a slow walk along the water is often all anyone wants.

Who this loop suits, and who should pick another day
This tour suits travellers with one free day who want the railway, the fjord and a taste of Viking history without driving or changing hotels. It is also a fair choice for families with older children who can manage a long day with plenty of sitting.

It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or for wheelchair users, according to the listing. Think twice as well if you dislike long coach rides: the day lasts 10.5 hours, and a good share of it is spent travelling between the highlights.
If you want more time in one place, a slower day may suit you better. The Norway in a Nutshell page explains the self-guided version, and the Flåm page lists tours that add the Stegastein viewpoint or a longer stop in Flåm.
